Nuclear energy: Because you won't get there with renewables

Nuclear energy has a crappy reputation. Nearly all associations are negative--Homer Simpson, mushroom clouds, Chernobyl. Yet by any objective, verifiable measure, nuclear is safer, cleaner, and more reliable than all other energy sources. It is also carbon free and produces power all hours of the day, every day, unlike renewables. So why do so many people remain opposed to nuclear when it will be nearly impossible to fight climate change without it? Michael will talk about how humans went from cutting down trees, to digging up coal, to pumping oil, to splitting atoms--all to satisfy an insatiable need for energy and why harnessing energy from the atom was our greatest achievement and the most promising way to save our planet.  help.

About Michael
Michael Hewitt is the founder of Criticality Thinking, a firm that works to explain nuclear energy to anyone willing to listen. Michael began his career working on non-proliferation programs in the former Soviet Union and then spent several years as the Deputy Director of NATO’s office in Moscow, back when NATO and Russia sort of got along. He spent 10 years in the Middle East where the nuclear energy program of the United Arab Emirates rekindled his interest in the sector. For the past seven years he has worked in the nuclear energy field consulting to fuel firms, utilities, and start-ups.

The time I decided not to get married and bought a house instead

The expectations for women are set from the start: their ability to survive and thrive in financial security is wholly dependent on the man she marries. For many women, this myth never materializes or wasn't appealing to begin with. But the idea that we can scrimp and save to build wealth is another fairy tale. Jackie Falla offers a shift in perspective, lays bare the truth, and opens up a path to wealth you may not have considered: Home ownership. She offers a way to game the system by putting the power of your financial future solidly back in your control. With courage, a willingness to learn, and compassion for ourselves and our homes, you can build a foundation of wealth and freedom.

About Jacqueline
Jackie Fall serves as Director of Client Services for Elaine Construction Company, a Women-Owned and Operated Commercial Builder. In her spare time, she is a house flipper, designer, writer, and staunch advocate for women’s rights. She is the host of the FM Forward Podcast, sits on a number of Boards within the A/E/C Industry, and pens the blog: Quest for the Nest, which chronicles her adventures, buying, renovating, selling, and moving, in her attempt to build wealth. She is currently working on her book: Sawdust 2 Gold: A Gals Guide to Building Wealth Through Real Estate.

Kim Hudson

Healing is an Inside Job: The unconscious patterns that are keeping you stuck!

After years of doctors, naturopaths, and therapists to end her own pain, herbalist Kim Hudson learned that healing isn't just about what you take, but how, or whether, you access and influence your subconscious patterns. In her talk, Kim explains how healing actually works, and why it's not something you can 'think' your way into; it happens when you connect with your body and listen instead to what it has to say.

About Kim
Kim is an herbalist in practice for 12 years and founder of The Little Herb Shoppe, The Lakota Botanical & Wildlife Sanctuary and her wellness brand, Pure Love Botanicals. She also graduated with an M.S. in Global Finance and Economics the decade she tried living a conventional life! While a desk wasn’t a fit, it opened her eyes to 3rd world development & economic empowerment, and her heart to the wisdom of cultures still connected to their indigenous roots. Kim's practices include plant medicine, yoga, somatic work, and other wisdom traditions. She uses intuition, instinct and insight to guide her clients on the journey within to understand the wisdom of their body.

Kim's next Transformational Herbal Program starts in June. And she hosts group and 1:1 retreats on Cape Cod and in Vermont. Learn more about these and her wellness brand at PureLoveBotanicals.com

Just make it blue: Myths, truths, and ideas in branding and design

When it comes to visual communications, you may not realize all that your eyes see, what your brain remembers, and how it's impacted by how it was designed. In her talk, Jillfrances Gray explains the psychology of design, color, shape, and typography to help clarify the misconception of design as a tool to “just make it pretty.” Underneath it all, there is intention, skill, intelligence, and manipulation—most of which the average person misses. Jillfrances walks you through how designers capture your attention, and how to apply this strategic approach to your own brand.

Ann Daugherty

How to value your work and your worth by saying no to more things
How can you be true to yourself, care for yourself, and value yourself when the mass media, society and maybe even your employer tells you outright or by less direct means that you are just not ….enough? Not thin enough, smart enough, effective enough? Women in particular are influenced subliminally and told overtly that they should dress like models, act like movie stars, but still expect less for themselves. Lower pay, less acknowledgement for their efforts and accomplishments, and simply not be heard. How can you counteract this? Use the four simple concepts outlined in this talk to better understand what it means to give yourself true self care and to take ownership of your own value.

About Ann
Ann Daugherty had a Ph.D. and was a scientist at a large biotech/pharma company for over 30 years when she made a career change for which she had no training or experience: communications. She had authored over 50 scientific publications and books, and patents, had chaired scientific conferences, but she really wanted to be an artist and writer (but not of scientific papers!) Living a life more aligned with her intuitive, creative side has shown her the power of seeing options rather than obstacles, and owning challenges to overcome them. When not doing her comms job, she is mentally writing plots for novels while mucking out the pens of her two rescue miniature horses.

NO LIMITS: How the portfolio career expands your possibilities

What do you DO? This is an exasperating question for a creative person. If you can label your life in one word, you just might be limiting yourself. Are you happy with your answer? When Jennet decided to go into music as a career, she was told it would be LIMITING. Don't worry: A psychiatrist unpacks the myths around mental health treatment

You might be under the impression, as many are, that psychiatry is merely a pill-pushing operation. Or, that psychiatry itself is an attempt to "fix" the brain. In fact, the term psychiatry translates from ancient Greek to mean “healing the soul." And even with advances in genetic studies and imaging capability, the soul, as well as your brain with its 86 billion neurons, remain a mystery. That doesn't mean mental illness is inevitable or untreatable. Dr. B unpacks the misconceptions around this field and how she and others work with the data they do have to create the best outcomes for patients with mental health struggles, and how fresh and innovative approaches to the doctor-patient relationship can transform mental health.

About Jessica
Dr. Jessica Beachkofsky has been practicing psychiatry and empowering patients for over a decade. She loves helping people understand more about themselves and mental health while offering treatments that align with their values. Dr. B sifts through studies and research sharing the most meaningful data with her patients. So many smart people are looking for the answers to mental health questions and just not finding them fast enough. But by building collaborative doctor-patient relationships and being transparent about how psychiatry can help, she’s creating optimism even without all the answers.

Beyond the Lawn: How to reimagine your yard as a diverse and sustainable landscape

The traditional American yard is a perfectly manicured monoculture—an unsustainable choice that requires a considerable amount of water and toxic chemicals to maintain. But what's the alternative? Does the term "sustainable landscape" call to mind a meadow of wildflowers? A tangled mess of overgrown shrubs and weedy perennials? There's far more to it than that. In her talk, landscape designer Susan Flint takes you on a tour of some beautiful backyard alternatives, including tips for using native plants, diversity, and design that are not just pleasing to the eye, but beneficial to your community—even the earth itself.

About Susan
Susan Flint is the owner/principal designer of Flint Garden Designs. She has been in practice for 10 years. She uses her expertise to create beautiful, unique, thoughtful, multi-seasonal designs, accentuating the site's assets. She employs native plants for each project to support the local habitat for the birds and pollinators. Her ultimate goal is to make our world a healthier place to live, work and play, one space at a time. When not designing other peoples gardens you can find her tinkering in her own garden in the summer or cross-country skiing with her dog in the winter.

First Person: Why writing personal narrative is critical for kids, teens, and everyone else

If you think you know critical thinking, think again. Yes, critical thinking is an essential life skill, especially in the workforce, but it has a downside: It can make us strangers to ourselves. Using examples drawn from her work as a seasoned teacher and college essay specialist, Kristie explains why teens (and the rest of us) benefit from the power of personal narrative—and what happens when we don't. What she found will change the way you think about personal narrative and could revolutionize your own and your family’s social and emotional intelligence and mental health.

About Kristie
Kristie Schmidt is a writing coach who shepherds writers of all ages to see their work, and themselves, in new ways. A former public school teacher, she has worked with 6 year old poets, 8 year old storytellers, 12 year old biographers, teen college essayists, and adult memoirists. How it works

FIRST, we craft.

These speakers learned a fresh approach to creating a signature, 10-minute talk, with guidance, feedback, and the opportunity to generate, develop, and shape it.

Then, we deliver.

During the speaker showcase, they will present their ideas and insights in less than 10 minutes.

Why 10 minutes?

Because it’s the sweet spot for building a talk. If you can’t make your point in 10, you will struggle to do it in 20. The 10-minute window allows enough time for you to articulate your thought and argument, but not so much time that you can wander off. It encourages you to be economical in how you think through and organize your ideas. Plus, once you have the base of a 10-minute talk, you can dial it back to do a shorter version, or build on and expand it into a longer talk when you need to.
